The goal of re- and upcycling should be to create beautiful things, not just to collect old yogurt cups to use as flower pots. We will show you how to create practical art from waste while also being environmentally friendly. A positive side effect: it’s fun and fosters creativity.
Recycling means breaking things down to their original form. Plastic goes to plastic, paper to paper, and so on. The example of bottles makes this understandable. Bottles with the recycling symbol are collected, processed, melted down, and the material is reused for further products. The raw material does not end up in the trash, but is reused.
With upcycling, products are not broken down, but simply reused. They get a makeover and then serve as decoration, storage boxes, or have another meaningful purpose. Overall, less is thrown away and less needs to be bought. This conserves resources and thus the environment.
A classic example of upcycling is furniture made from Euro pallets. In the simple version without armrests, only with a backrest, they are a good beginner's project. You need three pallets, two of which serve as the seat and the third as the backrest. The wood is sanded down and smoothed, and can then be painted or treated with wood stain. Two of the pallets are screwed together to form the seat. The third pallet is diagonally screwed to one end of the seat. Once completed, the couch can be decorated with soft cushions and blankets, adding flair to any balcony.
You will need a branch with a diameter of about 10 cm, which you can find on your next walk in the forest, hooks, and a link chain for ceiling mounting. Measure regular intervals on your branch and pre-drill small holes. You can determine the number of holes yourself, depending on the length of the branch and how many hangers you want to attach. Screw the hooks into the wood with the screw side. On the opposite side, screw in only 2 hooks. Attach the link chain to these, which is then hooked onto the ceiling mount. Once the structure hangs from the ceiling, hang it with clothes hangers. Tip: For added coziness, wrap a string of lights around the clothes rack.
